The 3rd Annual Buena Vista Whitewater Park Fundraiser
For the 3rd year in a row, Missed The Boat is returning to Buena Vista (on Saturday Feb. 9th @ 9:00 PM) to help raise funds and awareness for The Buena Vista Whitewater Park. The BVWP (Buena Vista Whitewater Project) has been on a mission since 2001 to improve what is already one of the worlds greatest whitewater parks. The event takes place each year at The Asian Palate Thai and Sushi Restaurant, which has proven to be the perfect location. It's a very unique, small, controlled environment owned and operated by Eddie Sandoval, a BV local who shares a similar vision for future growth. I spoke to event promoter Earl Richmond, to gain a better understanding of what the event is all about, and more importantly what can be done to help with the fundraising efforts. According to Earl, "the river park fundraiser accomplishes a lot of things. It creates a desirable weekend in Buena Vista, which draws people to the Upper Arkansas Valley to ski, hike and recreate in our county. They also shop in downtown BV, which is good for the economy. Missed the Boat, fits the bill for many reasons. They are a river centric band, with river centric tunes. They also understand the importance of raising money for a cause like this. Every dollar earned, as a result of this event (ticket cost, beer profits, donations, etc) goes directly towards future river park improvements."

How can you help?

The town of Buena Vista has committed to donating $3500 a year, if the funds are matched by public donation. That means that for every dollar the River Park Fundraiser generates, the town of BV will donate the same amount. With an annual budget of $7,000 - spot cleaning and upgrades, maintenance and beautification are now possible. It costs about $15-$25K to build a new feature, or make major upgrades to ones. All of the overflow money (above and beyond the $3500 raised to match the town) will go towards major improvements such as the renovation of the corner pocket wave (the next big project). Every dollar counts, and because of that, we've set up a crowd funded donation web site.
