After paddling this for a few weeks and saucing boofs the Werner Surge blade lives up to the hype. Each stroke offers more power with less effort being exerted.
The blade itself weighs only slightly more than the Odachi (Werner’s lightweight carbon race paddle), making it an affordable alternative as a racing paddle with a similar forward offset in the blade. It has a more angular design than the Odachi, similar to the blade of a Powerhouse. As someone who is used to paddling with the Powerhouse, it made everything slightly more fluid. Each stroke had a little more purchase and each roll began a little higher in the water. The Surge offers a racing blade that can take a beating. The fiberglass makes it great for paddling anything from big water to low volume creeking.
If you’re looking for a new river running paddle or a racing blade on a budget try out the Surge and I’m sure you’ll love it as much as I have.
